#unifyUSA’s Call to Action to California Governor Newsom: The People Demand a Participatory Democracy – Convene a State Citizens Assembly
It’s Time for The Golden State to Set an Example and Reclaim Our Power
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington, DC (June 24, 2025) – U.S. military troops have been deployed against peaceful protestors, while a masked, marauding gang is terrorizing our streets - and California is the test case for collapsing our country into an entrenched authoritarian state. Every day, the Trump administration lobs growing assaults on our essential liberties like freedom of speech and due process in an unprecedented bastardization of our federal government.
We are deep in the breach. Our Constitution has been hijacked and is being rewritten in the dark shadows. Justice has been trampled. The specter of martial law hangs in the balance. Amidst the fear and chaos, it’s time for the people to take back their power and stop the coup.
We call on Governor Newsom to convene a State Citizen’s Assembly to harness the voices of Californians and rewrite our shared future.
We need a refreshed U.S. Constitution and a social contract created of the people, by the people, for the people. In every corner of this country, the people are hungry for bold and decisive leadership that stands up to would-be dictators and acts in solidarity with vulnerable communities – and California has always been at the forefront of the fight.
We urge you to take up the mantle of deliberative democracy now and be that bell weather for Governors across the nation – before our fate is sealed.
#unifyUSA is an inter-partisan citizens movement and convenor of The Great American Rewrite - a historic, peaceful uprising to convene State Citizens’ Assemblies in all 50 states, culminating in a National Citizens’ Assembly. Our goal is clear: to co-create a refreshed U.S. Constitution that reflects the hopes, dignity, and wisdom of all the people.
